The Navy Day was first celebrated in 1942, to honor the crews of Mexican tankers which were sunk by German submarines, resulting in the loss of many Mexican marines. The date was chosen because it was the June 1, 1917 when Article 32 of the constitution, which established the requirement that vessels carry the national flag were manned by Mexican birth was applied.
