Annual Protection Practice of Coatzacoalcos Port
December 03, 2010
The Port of Coatzacoalcos made its protection practice for the year 2010, in compliance with the guidelines emanating from the code of Protection for Ships & Port Facilities, PBIP.
Coordinated by the Port Authority and Navy Secretary, all terminals installed at both campuses (Port of Coatzacoalcos and Laguna de Pajaritos) participated in the drill, as well as various entities such as Maritime Customs of Coatzacoalcos, National Migration Institute, PEMEX, Federal Police and of course the Administration Port Authority of Coatzacoalcos.
The protection event was the hijacking of a ship by a subversive group, who threatened it with explosive devices and therefore the port facility. The ship's crew was taken hostage, thereby increasing seriousness of the security incident.
When alarm was activated, 15 certified companies from Coatzacoalcos Port put their emergency plans in practice, being supervised by their protection officials (OPIP) at all time.
At 10:01 am the port security level was increased, so security measures were also raised up, starting a major mobilization in which rescue units, first aid and fire fighting systems helped to evacuate the staff working within the port facilities.
The hijacked vessel was addressed by speedboats, supported by military tactics implemented by the Navy, making possible to rescue crew of the vessel and to capture responsible threateners of the incident, which concluded at 10:58 hrs.
It is important to mention that was the presence of OAS instructors (Organization of American States) serving as observers of the event, which highlighted during the closing session, that the training and collaboration between different agencies resulted in a successful practice.
With these actions the Port of Coatzacoalcos, leader of Mexico's Bulk Cargo maintains its high standards in protection and helps in the management and continuous improvement tasks for a safe harbor.
